Hiking near Argeles in the South of France
Return to the comfort of your four-star mobile home in Argelès sur Mer after having yomped around outdoors in an outstanding environment. Many hikes are perfect for families with children or grandparents with grandchildren. Others are only suitable for sports people.
The coastal path
From Le Racou to the south of the great beach, extending as far as Collioure and Port Vendres, the coastal path covers 10 km. Sometimes running along the windswept cliffs, the path takes you down into the small, isolated creeks in parts of the coast others rarely see. Take a break in the port of Collioure before continuing on to Port-Vendres from where a bus will take you back to Le Racou.
Enjoy a refreshingly cool atmosphere on a hot day… An hour away from Argelès, at the Spanish border, Massane Forest has more than 50,000 trees from 7,000 different varieties. A protected nature reserve for more than 40 years now, this forest is something of a research laboratory into biodiversity as it is influenced by its proximity to the Mediterranean, the Pyrenees and Spain.
The Orgues de l’Ille sur Têt
One of those little miracles which only nature can produce … The Orgues de l’Ille sur Têt rock formations, also known as the "Cheminées des fées" (fairy chimneys) are cliffs carved out of the sand and clay, shaped by the climatic conditions, the wind and the rain, and deposited there like some attractive decorative feature whose colour changes throughout the day. Located 45 minutes from Argelès.
The Catalans don't just “like” it... they love it! A paradise for sports lovers. Reaching up to an altitude of 2,784 m, there are very few Catalans who have never been here. Nevertheless, climbing it requires a good two days for experienced, well equipped hikers. For the rest of us, it's possible to reach the summit by hiring a guide with a 4x4 or making your way up the foothills with a donkey, which is very practical for carrying bags and young children. Many hiking trails, suitable for all abilities, are marked out throughout the range. You can download the details and obtain a wealth of useful information here: http://www.tourisme-canigou.com/
