Both a famous resort town in the Pyrénées-Orientales and a historic city, Argelès-sur-Mer is a top tourist destination with a rich cultural and architectural heritage. Once a strategic site on the border of the Kingdom of France and the Kingdom of Majorca, the remains of the ancient ramparts have been preserved, as well as a fortified church dominated by one of the highest bell towers in the region and a watchtower on the Albera Massif, La Massane Tower. Built in the 13th century at an altitude of 800 m, it was part of a network of watchtowers designed to defend the Kingdom of Majorca.
